DESCRIPTION:The neighborhoods of McKinley Park and Brighton Park lie just t
o the west of their better-known neighbor Bridgeport\, and perfectly fit t
he working class Chicago stereotype of “smokestacks and steeples.” These n
eighborhoods were industrial from their beginnings\; just five years after
the 1871 fire\, 11 factories and 27 brickyards had already opened their d
oors in McKinley Park\, and the area’s industrial base continued to grow r
apidly for years to come.\nOn this tour\, we will explore the overlooked i
ndustrial history of these Chicago neighborhoods\, including portions of t
he first planned industrial park constructed in the nation\, as well as an
experimental Progressive Era park\, seen above right. We’ll examine remna
nts from past eras\, ethnic groups and social histories\, including corner
taverns\, retail relics\, historic churches\, and overlooked architectura
l gems. As always\, the tour will also take a look at old signs and other
oddities that are hallmarks of Forgotten Chicago’s tours and research.\nCl
