Neighborhood Journalism Gets Boost From Grant Funding

Grants from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation and the Chicago Headline Club will power local journalism for the McKinley Park neighborhood of Chicago in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, announced Justin Kerr, publisher of the McKinley Park News. Each grant will go directly toward funding news coverage of McKinley Park and new journalism initiatives to support the community, Kerr said.

Support Network Forums Fight Pandemic via Channel for Neighborhood Communication

Free Classified Advertising Offered to Residents Through Neighbors Program of the McKinley Park News

Local residents can get free access to post and manage classified ads on the McKinley Park News through the publication’s Neighbors program, announced Publisher Justin Kerr. The Neighbors program, available at no cost to verified residents of the McKinley Park neighborhood, provides unique online resources with the assurance of relevant and neighborly communication, Kerr said.

An evolution of the McKinleyPark.org project, the McKinley Park News continues its focus on the McKinley Park neighborhood of Chicago by covering community news and event information, and offering features to support the neighborhood's residents, institutions and enterprises.

"The success of the McKinleyPark.org website led to the decision to evolve into the McKinley Park News," said Publisher Justin Kerr. "This change will help the project grow, and it more accurately reflects our status as a publishing operation."

McKinley Park News Announces Institutions Program to Serve Neighborhood Residents, Organizations

The McKinley Park News, a hyper-local online publication exclusively covering the McKinley Park neighborhood of Chicago, has announced its Institutions program to serve the community’s residents and organizations. Built on the publication's interactive membership system, the Institutions program enables qualified sharing of community events and news while also providing a unique database of community resources.

A Proposal for a Neighborhood Publication

At the center of Chicago rests the McKinley Park neighborhood, filled with city bustle, quiet streets and a diverse mix of residents and businesses. It's one of the oldest settled areas in the region, rich with historic sites and the crumbling edifices of Chicago's swaggering industrial past. In so many ways, McKinley Park is a fantastic place to live: centrally located with great transportation, lower crime than all adjacent neighborhoods, affordable housing, comfortable density, a fantastic and huge park, and a growing cadre of civically active residents doing their part to improve the neighborhood and city.

However, McKinley Park has suffered an information deficit: a lack of good coverage of the people, events and news that both connect neighbors and provide context for a neighborhood.
