"They have to come back and deal with the community," Cardenas said. "The construction permit has been put on hold."

As reported here in the McKinley Park News, the planned restaurant development proposes a one-story Dunkin' restaurant and drive-through on the northwest corner of South Archer Avenue and South Leavitt Street across from the CTA Orange Line El stop in the McKinley Park neighborhood.

According to the originally issued City of Chicago building permit, it received approval through a self-certification process that awarded the permit the same day developer Sanjeev Khatau applied for it: January 4, 2021.

"That should not be a self-certification permit," Cardenas said, adding that his office had neither received information about nor participated in Chicago zoning board of review processes regarding the development. "They need to work with alderman’s office first."

Accordingly, the Chicago Department of Buildings has placed a hold on the permit, Cardenas said in a statement posted to a McKinley Park neighborhood Facebook group.

Community Feedback

Cardenas said many community members reached out to his office about the development. "Thank you to every resident that has called us to express their concerns," he said.

In particular, residents noted the recent fatal pedestrian accident at the busy Archer and Leavitt intersection, Cardenas said.

Next steps involve community development engagement: "We will invite the developer to participate in a community meeting to share details of the site plan, discuss traffic patterns and pedestrian safety," Cardenas said. "We will keep everyone posted."
