McKinley Park Honors and Thanks Veterans with Ceremonies, Breakfasts

The McKinley Park neighborhood celebrated the service and sacrifices of U.S. veterans at events on and preceding Veterans Day on Thursday, November 11, 2021, including veterans breakfasts and a ceremony at William McKinley American Legion Post 231.

Garcia added that veterans deserve more than just thanks, and he highlighted legislative efforts to provide better support for veterans’ health care and employment, as well as ensuring that non-citizen veterans are never deported.

A Special Day

Across the street at Horizon Science Academy – McKinley Park, another breakfast brought together veteran staff and family members, former service members representing American Legion Post 231, and veterans in the Chicago Fire Department.

“It was a special day for our community,” said Jena Armouti, outreach coordinator for Horizon. Students performed music and read letters to veterans, who also received a small gift of appreciation from school mascot Hugo the Hawk.

Pat McGuire, commander for William McKinley American Legion Post 231, said veterans’ service and sacrifice has resulted in “a legacy of freedom … a legacy that has spread around the globe.”

Neighborhood American Legion

He and other members of Post 231 gathered at the post on Veterans Day, joined by American Legion members and leaders from nearby Dorman-Dunn American Legion Post 547. The two American Legion posts have started collaborating and cooperating on events and veterans initiatives, Pat said.

Illinois 1st District State Senator Tony Muñoz, who is a veteran and Post 231 member, attended and spoke at the Veterans Day ceremony, which included a commemoration and salute, as well as a bugle rendition of Taps.

Fund-Raiser This Weekend

McGuire highlighted one way the public can support a local veteran this weekend: Post 231 is hosting a fund-raiser the evening of Saturday, November 13, 2021, for member, veteran and local resident Stewart Miller, who is fighting stage four cancer.

The public is invited to attend the fund-raiser at the post, 1956 W. 35th St., Chicago, with the $20 admittance going toward defraying medical costs for Miller.
