Development Council Advocates for Latino Caucus Ward Map
The McKinley Park Development Council, a non-profit organization serving Chicago’s McKinley Park neighborhood, released a statement advocating adoption of the Latino Caucus ward map, one of a handful of ward maps proposed for redistricting Chicago’s ward boundaries.
“We at the [McKinley Park Development Council] support the Chicago Coalition Map from December 1, 2021, that places the neighborhood and the [Central Manufacturing District] within one continuous ward,” the council said in an online statement.
“Chicago aldermen are currently redrawing the ward boundaries for the city,” the statement said. “This will affect not only who your alderman is, but also can affect development opportunities, zoning and neighborhood services you receive.”
Within a Single Ward
As previously reported here in the McKinley Park News, the Chicago Latino Caucus ward map is an alternative proposed against the ward map drawn by the City of Chicago and supported by the council’s Black Caucus.
Likewise, maps from the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission and the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) propose their own ward boundaries. However, only the Latino Caucus map keeps the McKinley Park neighborhood within a single ward: the 12th.
Consensus or Referendum
The Chicago City Council must get at least 41 of 50 aldermen and alderwomen to agree on a map, or the issue goes to a voter referendum during next summer’s election on June 28, 2022. The council still has until May 19, 2022, to agree on a map and avoid a referendum.
The map collection put together by Chris Kanich offers views of the current ward map and several proposed for redistricting. (Click the expand menu icon at the upper left of the embedded map to switch between proposed maps.)
Meeting This Wednesday
The McKinley Park Development Council announced they will be providing more information on their stance on Chicago ward redistricting at the McKinley Park Development Council Meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, conducted online.
In addition to redistricting, the meeting will also present updates on neighborhood initiatives to encourage equitable transit-oriented development (ETOD), statuses for grants and other business, the council announced.
