"One City Tap focuses on providing a respectful service to our patrons and a verbal description of the products that we carry," said co-owner Marco ("J.R.") Lopez. One City Tap is a family business, with J.R. and his father, Marco Lopez Sr., as co-owners and managers, joined by brother Gio Lopez, who works as manager and mixologist. Two additional employees help out on Tuesdays and weekends.

His father has been working in the industry since an early age, Lopez said, and himself for 11 years. "We both thought that it was time to implement those skills in something that we had been dreaming of for a long time," he said. Starting in the summer of 2016, they scouted the location, connected with the building owner, solicited the support of 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas and presented their business to the community at a fall 2016 community meeting.

The last step was coming up with a name, Lopez said. "We decided to name it One City Tap because we believe that in Chicago there is no North Side or South Side," he said. "Chicago is one city, which we all love and respect."

One City Tap has been active in the McKinley Park neighborhood by donating bicycles to past McKinley Park bike rides and holiday toy donations. The business is sponsoring a scholarship softball tournament this May and is looking for more ways to provide support. "We want to get more involved in this community because we believe it is truly amazing," Lopez said.

Other community support comes through the groups sponsored at Otro Ritmo, the South Side's only punk night, scheduled on the second Tuesday of the month. DJ Lalo hosts Karaoke nights on the second Wednesday and last Thursday of the month, and Loteria Night falls on the last Tuesday of every month, usually with brewery glassware prizes, Lopez said.

The biggest upcoming event, though, is the One City Tap One Year Anniversary Party, which falls on this Saturday, May 5, Cinco de Mayo, and will feature tacos on the house, drink specials, giveaways, a raffle and DJs spinning late.

"We can’t believe that it has been a year since we opened our doors to the public," Lopez said. "It wasn’t easy, but we were able to bring this service to this amazing community."
