St. Maurice Church at 3615 S. Hoyne Ave., Chicago, will soon be put up for sale by Blessed Sacrament Parish, Fr. Ismael Sandoval-Manzo stated in the parish's April 28, 2024, church bulletin.

St. Maurice Church, which has been shuttered since its last mass on September 26, 2020, has continued to lease part of its property, including a school building hosting Velma Thomas Early Childhood Center, a Chicago Public Schools (CPS) preschool.

"We are finally going to put St. Maurice property on the market," Sandoval-Manzo wrote.

As previously reported here in the McKinley Park News, parishioners protested the 2020 deconsecration of the church with the Archdiocese of Chicago. However, the huge debt burden of all the churches formerly operated by the parish was unmanageable, the archdiocese said.

CPS Not Interested

"We were waiting for CPS to give us a response about their desire to buy the property," Sandoval-Manzo said. "They are not interested."

"In the next few days, I am going to meet with the Realtor to see about the value of the property and the possible buyers," he said.

Velma Thomas Early Childhood Center has stated an interest in remaining in the McKinley Park neighborhood, as well as connecting with developers who may be able to offer a local, school-friendly site.

Please continue to follow this story. CPS has been completely inept and seemingly without a plan. They have only given co location as an option, even as early learning centers on the north side have been overhauled and opened.

Thanks for your feedback, Andrew. Yes, I saw word about the press conference today. Earlier this year, we put folks at Velma Thomas with real estate owners with available property right here in the neighborhood (including facing the park). However, I don't know what happened. It sounds like CPS does not want to invest in permanent property for the school.
