Kevin O'Neil, correspondent for the McKinley Park NewsCHICAGO — February 3, 2021 — Veteran local journalist Kevin O’Neil has joined the reporting team of the McKinley Park News, bringing his experience as an award-winning newsman and municipal civic leader to bear on the news and events of the McKinley Park neighborhood of Chicago.
O’Neil has logged newsroom stints at the Chicago Sun-Times and served as a longtime editor at the American Medical News of the American Medical Association. His Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from Penn State preceded his MBA in Marketing from Roosevelt University; his news team work led to a Peter Lisagor Award in Journalism for Public Service from the Chicago Headline Club/Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

In addition to O’Neil’s experience in journalism, he’s worked extensively in Chicago municipal development and governance, including serving as chief of staff for former 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore and board president for a non-profit economic development corporation.
O’Neil’s work in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the far North Side of Chicago also included chairing a zoning advisory committee and leading the neighborhood Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) group as beat leader for 18 years.
O’Neil has been a resident of the McKinley Park neighborhood since March 2020, moving from Rogers Park just before the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. “We still are looking forward to learning and seeing all that McKinley Park has to offer,” O’Neil said.
