The McKinley Park News has now been in operation as a small business for a little over three years, slowly building step by step toward a sustainable – and hopefully thriving – local news enterprise.
One of our most exciting projects this year has been working with the industry experts and fellow cohort members of the Metro Media Lab at the Medill School at Northwestern University. The lab’s current project is a survey that solicits feedback from local news readers like you to help us keep building and improving the McKinley Park News.
There’s no cost to participate, and the survey should take less than 20 minutes to complete. Also, two respondents will be randomly chosen to each receive a $50 preloaded Visa card.
Lab Work
This survey is one of a number of our initiatives with the Metro Media Lab. You may have participated in one of our audience focus groups from last summer. (If so, thank you!) We’ve also delved deeply into expenses and income, trying to crack the business puzzle of sustaining a contemporary, neighborhood-level news enterprise.
All this necessary start-up work comes at a cost to our regular operations, including our publishing schedule, and I thank you and all readers for your patience. I have many great neighborhood news stories that I’m itching to get online, but as this publication’s sole primary resource, I’ve had to divide my attention toward these necessary startup tasks.
Back to Business
I’m so looking forward to successfully completing these and other projects, and leveraging all the benefits that they will bring. Of course, I’m also looking forward to getting back to a regular news publishing cycle.
Indeed, this has felt like a rebuilding year for all three pillars of our operations: editorial product, technology platform and business development and management. However, I’m confident all this work is going to pay off, including more and better neighborhood news for you.
You Are Our News
You are part of the story of our neighborhood, of course, and we want to understand what you think is important for local news, as well as more about you and other readers. (The privacy of survey respondents is kept intact, of course.) You can be a really big help to us by taking the survey, so please do so.
I thank you and all our readers as always for your attention, your consideration and your patronage of the McKinley Park News. All the best to you and yours!
