The Velma Thomas Early Childhood Center, a Chicago Public School, is hosting open house events for perspective families on May 4, 11 and 18.

The program opened in McKinley Park in 2004, offering a progressive developmental educational experience, inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach. Classrooms are staffed by three educators (two teachers and a classroom assistant). Parents can choose to place eligible children into dual language Spanish/English classrooms or into English language classrooms that support second language learners (Mandarin and Cantonese and others) as well as monolingual English students.

Half-day classrooms are available for children age 3 or 4 by Sept. 1, 2023, and a full day option is offered for children enrolled in their second year in the school. The school follows the CPS calendar. Applications are open online at the Chicago Early Learning website. More information about the school is at the Velma Thomas Early Childhood Center website.
