1. What are the top issues facing the McKinley Park neighborhood area of your ward, and what are your proposed solutions?
Our sense of the issues is informed through communicating with residents. We have been canvassing and held a community meeting in McKinley Park. The issues our campaign has heard come up the most is the need to build community between neighbors to have more public safety strategies, traffic issues on side streets, affordable housing and gentrification, and the steady increase of heavy industry that is causing local air pollution.
One of our approaches to public safety is to ensure that the police force is not over encumbered with duties that are not in their job description. Data shows that in 2019, the police responded to 41,000 medical calls related to mental health issues. We support policies and funding for programs that would send mental health professionals instead. Police are also tasked with cleaning up after and responding to the problem of homelessness in our city, which the Chicago government should be addressing instead. City Council has closed mental health clinics, has failed to run our school system properly, is destroying our public transportation system - this is a clear recipe for disaster when it comes to having order in our society. The city has launched and set aside funding for many programs that could address many of these issues but has still failed to implement due to an inability to adequately staff them. Fixing our city level hiring issues (like not advertising available jobs and hiring too slowly) is essential.
Lots of people have told us about the issue of heavy traffic during rush hour, even on small side streets. We have heard that many have been promised a "traffic study" over and over, and then nothing happens. We already helped one neighbor in McKinley Park get petitions for speed bumps and the make the street one way. There is funding available in local TIF districts and in the ward budget to install more traffic calming measures like cul de sacs, roundabouts, one-ways, and raised crosswalks. We need a comprehensive plan to quickly identify the biggest problem areas and start making them safer immediately.
We have also heard about neighbors being pushed out due to rising housing costs, issues with CHA waitlists, and bad living conditions. I support creating more quality, family sized affordable housing and stronger tenant protections to keep our communities together. I also would demand more oversight into the CHA waitlists for housing and private management. I will fight to reduce the property tax burden on working class families in the 11th Ward, including McKinley Park, and assist residents with accessing any and all housing resources available to them.
I pledge to build an active relationship with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) to ensure that local polluters, especially in the 11th Ward area, are being held to the highest standards. I will also vocally oppose construction in/around McKinley Park of any new sites of heavy industry that causes significant pollution.

Nuestro sentido de los problemas se informa a través de la comunicación con los residentes. Hemos estado revisando y celebrado una reunión comunitaria en McKinley Park. 2. What are the greatest opportunities for improving the McKinley Park neighborhood and the ward, and how would you work to enable this?
The basics of having decent streets, sidewalks, trees, alleys, and waste management need to be covered. Some of this needs to be taken care of on the city level, however, I would act quickly to improve the delivery of these basics on a local level.
My first act as alderman will be to create an organized and fair system for responding to complaints and requests from residents (and for local issues the ward office staff observe ourselves). Anyone who contacts the ward office should know exactly what kind of response and follow up they can expect. Right now it’s very random and hit-or-miss.
I also want to create mass communication services for residents who would like to opt in to updates and survey questions about the ward.
Residents should also know about TIFs - these are local taxpayer dollars that can be used to improve our ward. Tens of millions of dollars from these funds go to big companies like Pepsi and Vienna beef. I pledge to get input on how this money is used and ensure that it benefits all of us.

3. How will you ensure that your constituents in the McKinley Park neighborhood will have their voices heard and considered in ward decisions?
I would like to create a few ways for neighbors to have input over everyday governance. First, I would institute a Zoning Advisory Board (ZAB) that would have resident representatives from our neighborhoods. All new development proposals must go to the board first, and if there are any concerns, the board is responsible for getting feedback from the affected area. In other wards with similar structures, there is a lot of deference given to people from the area where the development would happen. I also support requiring impactful developments to get written consent from residents in the immediate vicinity rather than simply sending out a notice.
There are two big groups within our ward of residents who do not get to vote, but whose lives are impacted by the decisions our elected officials make on their behalf. Those are youth and non-citizen residents. I would like to create a youth advisory board and an non-citizen advisory board to give input over decisions from their blocks to city hall.
I would also like to engage in participatory budgeting with some of the ward’s available discretionary funds, which would give opportunities to advocate for projects in McKinley Park.

Me gustaría crear algunas formas para que los vecinos tengan su opinión sobre la gobernanza cotidiana. Primero, instituiría una Junta Asesora de Zonificación (ZAB) que tendría representantes residentes de nuestros vecindarios. 4. After redistricting, the McKinley Park neighborhood is now irregularly chopped up between the 11th and 12th wards. How will you work with your fellow neighboring City Council representative on issues that straddle both wards, such as the revitalization of the 35th Street commercial corridor?
Collaboration is a very important word. I intend to work with all of the aldermen whose wards touch our borders and share communities of interest who may be split across elected officials, and would communicate regularly with the 12th Ward Alder. In addition, McKinley Park shares representatives in the Illinois General Assembly between the 12th and 11th wards, and I intend to communicate regularly with those representatives to help advocate for the interests of the residents here.
We can create projects together and with our constituents that share funding and planning. Along 35th street there are TIF districts both in the Bridgeport and McKinley Park area that touch. They have taxpayer dollars in them meant for just this kind of revitalization effort - and TIF districts that touch are permitted to share funds.

5. How will you ensure and improve the delivery of City of Chicago services to McKinley Park neighborhood residents and businesses?
My first act as alderman will be to create an organized and fair system for responding to complaints and requests from residents (and for local issues the ward office staff observe ourselves). Anyone who contacts the ward office should know exactly what kind of response and follow up they can expect. Right now it’s very random and hit-or-miss. We need more transparency over ward services, including what requests have been made, what level of severity they are, when they were requested, what recent actions has the ward office taken to address the issue, and when they were completed. We also need to proactively find issues that may go unreported but could cause dangerous conditions if left unaddressed.
I also want to create mass communication services for residents who would like to opt in to updates and survey questions about the ward.
Overall, we need more funding for city services, and to put that funding into creating more public sector, union jobs to perform those services. Understaffing is a major issue across city departments, and we have to actively recruit city employees to fill vacancies, and make sure we are following up on every lead we get.

6. What past experience, capabilities and capacities make you the best candidate for the job?
My life has been dedicated to public service. My efforts at my local food pantry, showing up for causes I believe in, supporting my neighbors when they need help, becoming a teacher at my neighborhood school - this is just my personality.
When I was elected as the union delegate for CTU at my school - which means I would help my coworkers with contract issues and facilitate union votes - I learned what it was like to work to achieve things together with people who may not have the same political views as myself.
I actually care about city government, labor rights, and smart policy. I think most of our representatives are focused on the wrong things and don’t actually have an interest in the everyday grind of making things run smoothly.
