The McKinley Park neighborhood's annual Garden Walk returns for the fourth time from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. this Sunday, August 14, 2016. Held at a variety of residential and institutional gardens throughout McKinley Park, the walk will feature the hard work of local gardeners and many activities for all ages.
"McKinley Park is home to many gardeners from all walks of life: All of us are excited to open our homes and community spaces to visitors and share our love of gardening," said organizer and McKinley Park neighborhood resident Jessica Fong. She added that some locations will feature sustainable living elements such as chicken coops, compost systems and rain barrels, and that private, school and church gardens will be featured.
At many garden locations, participants will be able to engage in an activity or possibly get a taste of some fresh produce, Fong said. For example, she plans to let walkers collect seeds from her garden that they can then plant next year. Other events are planned throughout the neighborhood in conjunction with the walk, which is designed to dovetail off the McKinley Park Farmers Market, held the same day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Archer Avenue and Western Boulevard.
Maps for the garden walk will be available the day of the event at the McKinley Park Farmers Market and also at the McKinley Park Community Garden at South Winchester Avenue and Pershing Boulevard. Maps can also be picked up before and during the event at Grandpa's Delight Ice Cream Café at 2025 W. 35th St., and a map and list of locations will be available on McKinleyPark.org.
