McKinley Park neighborhood residents have a convenient and responsible way to recycle their Christmas trees, thanks to the City of Chicago's program to pick up and mulch used Christmas trees at sites citywide, including at McKinley Park, 2210 W. Pershing Road, Chicago.

Available from Saturday, January 9, through Saturday, January 23, 2021, the free Christmas tree recycling service turns the trees into "mulch that will enrich and protect the soil at Chicago's beloved parks and forests," the city stated in an announcement on the Recycle By City website.

Natural Trees Only

Residents should only bring natural, formerly live trees that have no spray-on flocking to the site for recycling: Plastic and reusable trees are not accepted. In addition, residents should be sure to remove all decorations, tinsel, ornaments, lights and material from trees for recycling.

Residents should also remove any plastic bags or straps used for tree transport before depositing it in the recycling stall. Only Christmas trees will be recycled: Garlands and wreaths are not accepted for drop-off.

McKinley Park is one of 20 Chicago Park District sites citywide that is participating in the program.

Residents who would like to get their hands on free mulch for their own use can pick up at four locations in Chicago, including from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday at the Department of Streets and Sanitation building at 2342 S. Ashland Ave., Chicago. At this location, mulch is deposited behind the building on the northwest corner of the property.
