William McKinley American Legion Initiates New Scholarship Program
Southwest Side college student Claudia Vasquez now has an additional $1,000 to apply toward her dream of becoming a sound engineer, thanks to her award of a new scholarship from the William McKinley American Legion Post 231 in Chicago's McKinley Park neighborhood.
The scholarship program, which is co-sponsored by Illinois 1st District State Senator Antonio "Tony" Muñoz, awarded Vasquez the funds during a brief ceremony at St. Patrick's Day observances at the post headquarters at 1956 W. 35th St., Chicago. Post officers and members congratulated Vasquez, whose father, Marcelino Vasquez, is a post member.
Vasquez is finishing her final year at Flashpoint Chicago, a campus of Columbia College Hollywood that focuses on media production. "I want to go into studio recording," Vasquez said.
First Year for Scholarship
Arthur Rodriguez, the senior vice commander at the post, said this is the first year the scholarship is offered. The post plans to offer it annually, he said.
Any neighborhood veteran who is interested in information or joining should get in touch by visiting the post or calling (773) 254-4522, said Pat McGuire, junior chief commander and one of the post's leading boosters.
The William McKinley American Legion Post 231 is the sole veterans organization in the McKinley Park neighborhood and regularly hosts events and sponsors social service programs for its members and the community, said post Commander Bernie Stegmueller.
