Play Garden Preps for Spring with Help from McKinley Park Neighbors

Published April 24, 2021

The McKinley Community Play Garden at 3518-28 S. Wolcott Ave., Chicago, received an afternoon's worth of community labor toward getting the popular spot for kids ready for the season. The garden, managed by an all-volunteer committee, put out a call for help to pull weeds, spread mulch and generally tidy up the space on the afternoon of Saturday, April 24, 2021.

"The play garden looks amazing," said lead organizer and McKinley Park resident Jessica Fong. "We finished all of the work we set out to and more."

Fong noted the ongoing engagement the garden committee plans for the season, including both garden needs and new initiatives. The latter includes event planning at the garden and outreach to neighborhood teen-agers to get them involved in managing the garden and helping to plan garden programs and events for youth.

In addition to maintenance at the work day, the garden also received a new Book Box from the Neighbor to Neighbor Literacy Project. The Book Box provides free access for anyone to take or leave a book at the garden and is managed by local volunteers.

NeighborSpace, a Chicago-based non-profit manager of open spaces, provides the property for community use, with the support and management of the volunteer garden committee.

Those interested in volunteering or initiating youth programs are encouraged to send email to justinkerr@mckinleypark.news while committee communications channels are set up.
