The pool will reopen in spite of the significant and ongoing difficulties finding pool attendant and lifeguard staff, a common problem at many Chicago Park District pools, O'Malley said. In addition to providing MPAC-related updates, O'Malley related the latest pool status as provided to her by McKinley Park Supervisor Briana Soria.

The target date for McKinley Park's pool to open is Friday, June 25, which is the department-wide start date for Chicago's outdoor pools, O'Malley said. However, this start date is flexible for McKinley Park, and opening may need to be pushed back, depending on staffing and other circumstances. The pool would then be open for the summer through September 6.

Masks Required

Masks will be required by all pool patrons while in the field house and on the pool deck and patio, O'Malley said. This is Chicago Park Department policy, designed to provide protection for kids at the pool who are too young to qualify for COVID vaccination.

Although swim schedules have been posted on the Chicago Park District website, this is tentative, and the schedule is still to be formally announced, O'Malley said. Sessions for McKinley Park would prospectively include open swimming, family swimming and swim club sessions.

Public park governance for McKinley Park will continue under the McKinley Park Advisory Council, with meetings set for every other month. (The next McKinley Park Advisory Council Meeting is slated for 6 p.m. on Monday, August 9, 2021.) Current officers will continue in their roles, and no officer elections will be held this year, O'Malley said.

Hoyne Park Management

Hoyne Park, which before the pandemic had been managed in coordination with McKinley Park, will now be directly managed by Chicago Park District Area Manager Dennis Gonzalez, O'Malley said.

Although there is no word on when the long-awaited baseball scoreboard would be installed, the restrooms at the Hoyne Park field house are now open: a priority for the heavy use the park sees thanks to Omega Delta Youth Baseball and Softball League.

O'Malley also highlighted a number of park events coming up this season, including the Big Shoulders Ensemble Performance at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 21; the Chicago Dance Month Scavenger Hunt and Dance in the Parks on Wednesday, June 30; Enchanted Fairies on Tightrope on Tuesday, August 31; and the return of three shows for Midnight Circus at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 18.

New Yoga, Golf and Lacrosse

McKinley Park is also hosting a number of new free summer programs, thanks to a park district partnership with S3 Leagues. This includes scheduled Family Yoga sessions on Saturday, July 17, and Saturday, August 21.

S3 Leagues is also bringing a free, six-week Summer Golf Clinic to the park every Tuesday and Thursday starting July 6, and a free, weekly Summer Lacrosse Clinic starting on Wednesday, July 7, also running for six weeks.
