William McKinley American Legion Post 231 paid its respects to the 13 U.S. armed forces service members killed in a bomb explosion at the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 26, 2021, during the U.S. military withdrawal from the country.
The post set a table inside its clubhouse with a place for each of the 13 fallen soldiers, a display that will remain up through Veterans Day, said post Commander Patrick McGuire.
"We wanted to remember those [service members] killed in Afghanistan," McGuire said. He noted how post member Karen Pack took the lead in creating and adorning the memorial, which included name tags and an American flag for each fallen soldier.
McGuire said that veterans and their families are welcome to look to Post 231 as a home for camaraderie, veterans advocacy and civic action, including the many volunteer programs the post engages in to provide community support.
The post is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week in the McKinley Park neighborhood at 1956 W. 35th St., Chicago.
