Reward Offered in Theft of Architectural Artifact
Aberdeen Development Inc., which is rehabilitating the former Central Manufacturing District post office building at 1950 W. Pershing Road, Chicago, has issued a call for information and a reward for the return of an original historic building plaque stolen in August 2021.
“I literally cried when I heard about this,” said Magdalena Sciupider, a project manager for Aberdeen who has been shepherding development of the historic McKinley Park neighborhood property. “We want to get the building the way it was. It’s an important part of the building.”
Sciupider said the plaque – which commemorates the “Chicago Central Mfg. District, Junction Service, The Great Central Market” – was stolen about four weeks ago during tuck pointing and other brick work on the historic structure.
$500 Reward
Have you seen this historic plaque from Chicago’s Central Manufacturing District? It’s been stolen.Just prior to the theft, a man about 64 years old driving a blue Jeep Cherokee stopped at the building site and tried to buy the plaque from workers, who refused to sell it, Sciupider said.
Aberdeen is offering a $500 reward for return of the plaque, “no questions asked,” Sciupider said. “I don’t care, as long as we get it back.”
Anyone with information on the plaque, returning it, or the theft incident can call Sciupider at (708) 829-7276, she said.
President Park
“I am very hopeful it will turn out OK,” she said.
In addition to redeveloping the building at 1950 W. Pershing Road, Aberdeen Development is actively renewing other historic Central Manufacturing District properties, including the conversion of the former ice warehouse at 2135 W. Pershing Road, Chicago, into the President Park development.
