The Aquinas Literacy Center, a McKinley Park non-profit that for over 20 years has provided free English literacy services, has graduated a new batch of 17 volunteer tutors through its ongoing training program. Now, these individuals can join the ranks of fellow tutors who instruct English learners at the Center's new facility at 1751 W. 35th Street.

The growing demand for literacy training means the Center needs even more help, and it has scheduled another training session December 1-2 to get more volunteer tutors on board. Once trained, these individuals will work one-on-one for 90 minutes per week with local adults who wish to learn English.

Providing adult education in English as a Second Language is a critical need for the area, evidenced by Aquinas' long wait list of 40 pending English learners. Its network of volunteers is essential to accomplishing its mission, and since all instruction is in English, and knowledge of a second language is not required, native English speakers find it easy to become a tutor.

The Center's two-day training session takes place over a Friday evening and a full day on Saturday. Tutors must also complete an additional three hours of solo training, for a total of 13 hours. Once finished, the course yields a certificate and six-month subscription to ProLiteracy for the trained tutor.
