New literacy tutors contemplate their completed training at Aquinas Literacy Center.
New literacy tutors contemplate their completed training at Aquinas Literacy Center, including, in the front row, Maria Zepeda-Godinez, Monica Merker, Jim Kipka, Maria Diaz, Minnie Juggan, Mindy Ward and Marilyn Curran; in the second row, Kyle Brand Padilla, Kathryn Cohen, Linda Heath Quesada, Mimi Miller and La Rita Chatman; in the third row, Danielle Balinski, Ivana Del Real and Autumn Potter; in the fourth row, Peggy Burke and Ruth Lederer; and in the back row, Damon Feltz, Brett Rusin and Julio Romero.

The Aquinas Literacy Center hosted another training session this past weekend, bringing 20 new tutors online to assist its mission of providing literacy training to local adult immigrants. The Friday night and Saturday sessions are part of a total of 13 hours of training each tutor undergoes, resulting in their certification to teach English as a Second Language learners.

Although the center continues to grow, a backlog of 35 new pupils are waiting in the wings for their chance at instruction. To meet the demand, Aquinas will continue its tutor training sessions, setting the next one for the weekend of Friday, March 9.

Once tutors complete their training, they each receive a six-month membership to ProLiteracy, and they're cleared to conduct one-on-one training with learners. Volunteer Coordinator Sabrina Poulin noted that all tutoring is conducted in English, and knowledge of a second language is not required to be a tutor.

Anyone who is interested in getting more information or signing up to be a tutor should contact Poulin at (773) 927-0512 or sabrina@aquinasliteracycenter.org.
