The City of Chicago issued initial building permits for the two projects on December 8, 2021, and demolition of the existing buildings, including a former Walgreens pharmacy, started quickly afterward.

As previously reported here in the McKinley Park News, developers have planned a Starbucks drive-through restaurant and a 7-Eleven convenience store and gas station for the property.

Building Permits

The building permit for the Starbucks drive-through at 3800 S. Western Ave. spells out an initial scope of work to include site preparation, landscaping and build-out of a one-story building. An additional permit would cover construction of the restaurant interior.

The building permit for the 7-Eleven gas station and convenience store similarly covers site work and landscaping, and construction of the core and shell of the one-story convenience store. An additional permit will allow for build-out of the interior of the store, and another for underground gasoline storage tanks.

The site developers from Vequity first presented their plans for the Starbucks and 7-Eleven at a 12th Ward community meeting in October 2020. They also presented revised plans based on community feedback at a January 2021 meeting of the McKinley Park Development Council.
