Annual Crime Rate Jumps 7 Percent in McKinley Park

After a double-digit drop for two years, incidents of major crime in Chicago’s McKinley Park Community Area rose by almost 7 percent in 2021, compared to 2020.

Analysis of crime data from the City of Chicago’s Chicago Data Portal revealed details of the McKinley Park neighborhood’s crime rates, including double-digit year-to-year increases in assaults and motor vehicle thefts.

As previously reported here in the McKinley Park News, these incidents of “index crime” had been plummeting from 2018 through 2020.

Index Crimes

Index crime includes murder, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson, and commonly serves as an indicator of criminal behavior.

In 2021, assaults in McKinley Park rose by 23 percent, with 80 reported last year, compared to 65 and 49 assaults reported in 2020 and 2019, respectively.

McKinley Park motor vehicle theft also saw a big 20 percent jump to 36 reports in 2021, compared with 30 in 2020 and 25 in 2019.

Comparing 2020 to 2019, index crime fell 15 percent for the McKinley Park Community Area during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Civic Comparisons

The Lower West Side Community Area, which includes the Pilsen neighborhood north of McKinley Park, saw index crime significantly increase by 24 percent in 2021, as compared to 2020.

In the neighboring Bridgeport Community Area, index crime rose 4 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. Crime rose 8.6 percent in 2021 in the Brighton Park Community Area west of McKinley Park.

For the New City Community Area, which includes the Back of the Yards neighborhood south of McKinley Park, crime rose nearly 6 percent in 2021 compared to 2020.

For the City of Chicago overall, index crime fell by 1 percent in 2021 as compared to 2020.
