Dozens of the McKinley Park neighborhood's residential and commercial properties appear on the delinquency list for 2016 taxes and are at risk of being included in Cook County's upcoming annual tax sale on May 4, according to public data released by the Cook County Treasurer's office.
The properties span the neighborhood and include some properties deemed "most vulnerable," meaning that the owners might not even be aware of their tax delinquency. By law, the treasurer's office is required to auction off back taxes, which can lead to the owner losing the property to whomever pays for their owed taxes.
Property owners can look up the status of their properties at the Cook County Property Tax Portal or via the Cook County Treasurer website. On the delinquent properties page, the treasurer maintains a list that gets updated every Monday to reflect tax payments received. Any properties not caught up by May 3 get included in the auction, at which speculators bid on properties' back taxes.
To get off the list, a property owner can make a tax payment at the Cook County Treasurer website or in person via certified check, cashier's check, money order or cash. The treasurer's office offers a helpful brochure, available online, titled "How to Avoid the May 4, 2018, Tax Sale."
