At the April 11 meeting of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) meeting for Beat 912, representatives from the Chicago Police Department announced the apprehension of a primary suspect in the March 20 robbery of Humberto's Pizza on Pershing Road. According to third watch CAPS officer Oscar Escalante, the man is also a suspect in a string of robberies in other districts of the city, and police are narrowing down the hunt for the suspect's associates in the robbery.
CAPS officers also updated the community on neighborhood crime statistics at the meeting, and Vernalynn De La Rosa of the McKinley Park Underage Drinking & Other Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition presented on her group's activities and campaign against teen drinking for Alcohol Awareness Month.
Escalante reported on neighborhood crimes and statistics between March 14 and April 11; these included 956 calls for service, 16 calls of shots fired and four violent crimes, including two robberies, one battery and one incident of criminal sexual assault.
In addition to the Humberto's robbery, a purse snatching occurred at 36th Street and Hoyne Avenue the morning of March 29, Escalante said.
The suspect pictured in the surveillance video from the March 20 robbery of Humberto's Pizza has been apprehended, police said. Two burglaries took place over the past month, Escalante said, including an attempted burglary of an industrial building in the 3300 block of South Justine. Robbers had broken in to steal copper electrical wire, but they were discovered and accosted by employees. When questioned, the thieves said "we are those guys" and fled without taking anything. The other burglary in Beat 912 involved an apartment break-in on March 20 in the 1700 block of West 33rd Place.
Additional presentations at the CAPS meeting included information on street work and neighborhood projects from 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas, and updates on neighborhood graffiti and prevention from Beat Facilitator Glenn Young.
The next CAPS Meeting for Beat 912 is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at St. Maurice Church Hall, 3625 S. Hoyne Ave., Chicago.
