Current and prospective McKinley Park neighborhood homeowners and local landlords will learn best practices for managing their properties at the New Home Buyer and Landlord Seminar on Thursday evening at Bethany Baptist Church. The event, sponsored by the McKinley Park Development Council, includes a presentation and guided discussion from council member Mark Javier on how to best manage homeownership and renters, including information on qualifying tenants and conducting background checks.
In memory of Dennis De La Rosa, softball players will be competing at the DDLR Scholarship Softball Tournament, all day Saturday at Hoyne Park. Attend and cheer on the co-ed players, who will be raising money for the Dennis De La Rosa Scholarship Fund, a program to help provide money for college education to undocumented students attending Chicago Public Schools.
One of the neighborhood's biggest seasonal events is the Memorial Day Parade, kicking off at the library the morning of Monday, May 28, before winding through the neighborhood to a ceremony at the William McKinley American Legion Post at 35th and Damen. Get there early to march in the parade with one of the many participating community groups, or watch and cheer from the sidelines as McKinley Park remembers its veterans.
12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas hosts the weekly Ward Night on Mondays 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.; call ahead to make an appointment to discuss concerns and get help for property and neighborhood issues.
Local residents who speak only Mandarin and Cantonese can get help finding healthcare resources through a new program sponsored by the Midwest Asian Health Association out of the 12th Ward office. Make an appointment to attend a Chinese Language Healthcare Enrollment Assistance session on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon to navigate and enroll in Medicaid, Obamacare and other health plans.
The McKinley Park public library continues its popular Little Learners Story Time this week, engaging babies and toddlers with stories, songs and rhymes every Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the library.
