Make Music Chicago is kicking off McKinley Park's summer with a gargantuan lineup of music and performance this Thursday, June 21. Three performance areas feature 10 acts, starting at 5 p.m. and running into the evening. Top picks include blues music from Ronnie Shellist & Eric Noden, brass blowing from the top-end Chicago Horn Consort, the kids from Mariachi Tradición Juvenil and a whole lot more. DJ Purple — aka the Duke of House — will blow the doors off the field house with pulsing funky beats guaranteed to move your feet starting at 7:45 p.m. Bring your picnic gear, food and drink, the kids, and grandma: This is a can't-miss event for the neighborhood.
Development continues to roar in McKinley Park, and the McKinley Park Development Council is taking the lead on connecting residents, institutions and businesses in order to inspire development that benefits everyone. Meet with the council and have a great time networking with your neighbors at the McKinley Park Development Council Meeting, 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, at Marz Community Brewing. Council members will share some brief updates at the beginning of the meeting, then pivot to enjoying neighborhood camaraderie and Marz' top-tier fresh brews and tasty kitchen treats.
Doesn't McKinley Park have a nice pool? Flex your water wings to get ready for the season and help set a world record on Thursday evening, June 21, at the World's Largest Swimming Lesson. The pool's open this week for a one-off schedule (check the field house for details), then increased hours and more accommodating policies kick off free, daily sessions of open swimming, family swimming and adult swimming through Labor Day. Huge kudos to the McKinley Park Advisory Council, which fought for years to remove restrictive male- and female-only swim times. Check the full swimming schedule here on the Swimming Calendar.
Amazing Japanese drumming will make a return to McKinley Park on Sunday, June 24, with the Farmers Market Concert: Tsukasa Taiko, running from noon to 1:15 p.m. in front of the William McKinley memorial. This dovetails off the expanded McKinley Park Farmers Market, which features a burgeoning lineup of vendors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday through October.
The McKinley Park public library is kicking off ongoing summer programs for kids this week, including Planet Protectors, which meets Wednesday afternoons, and the Book Buddies on Thursday mornings. Both are part of the Chicago Public Library's ongoing summer programming for kids through its Summer Learning Challenge.
These are just some of the great neighborhood events happening in McKinley Park this week. Check the full calendar, featured events, showcase events and events dashboard for more.
