Hot Week for Music Lovers Brings Punk, Jazz, House and Marimbas to Neighborhood

Published August 13, 2018

The McKinley Park neighborhood's lineup for music is fantastic this week, starting with the unparalleled Otro Ritmo: South Side Punk Night, this Tuesday, August 14, at One City Tap. This monthly gathering of "punks, freaks, goths and mutants" is drawing crowds from all over Chicago, and this Tuesday's lineup features Porno Glows, Sol Patches and DJ Pillbug Junction alongside stalwart house DJs Malice and Orno.

Chicago is the home of house music, and Blue Groove Summer Sessions brings thumping, dancey beats to McKinley Park on Saturday, August 18, from some of the city's top DJs, performers and artists. Hosted by Dirty MF, the event features luminaries of Chicago house and dance music, including Jesse De La Pena accompanied by Grammy-nominated trumpeter Ron Haynes, along with Danny The WildChild and others. This free event brings a family friendly dance party to the park for everyone to enjoy.

Marz Community Brewing has launched its music residency series, this month a stand of Jazz and Ale with the Jazzeros. From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, Eric Kmiec, Paul Velat and Mike Finch — all veterans of Chicago's punk and experimental music scenes  — will perform jazz covers of 80s tunes, jazz standards and original compositions in the tap room. The Jazzeros' residency runs every Wednesday through August; visitors may also enjoy the Making Marz exhibition, which showcases the unique designs behind Marz' branding and products, and runs through August in the venue's gallery.

On Sunday, August 19, the Farmers Market Concert: Holy Cross Marimba Ensemble performs Mexican folk music on the marimba, the deeper cousin of the xylophone, from noon to 1:15 p.m. This concert dovetails off Sunday's McKinley Park Farmers Market, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the William McKinley memorial in McKinley Park and offers a variety of fresh produce, food and goods from local suppliers.

Right after the marimba concert, hop on your bikes with your children and join Kidical Mass, a family-friendly, leisurely bike ride through local streets. This ride, sponsored by the McKinley Park Advisory Council, runs on select Sundays through October.

The council is also busy this week with their McKinley Park Advisory Council Meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 13, at the field house in McKinley Park. Anyone who wants to join this dynamic group that is bringing so many good things to the park is encouraged to attend. The same goes for the McKinley Park Stewardship Day, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 18. Join your neighbors to help clean up the park and connect with your community.

These are just some of the great neighborhood events happening in McKinley Park this week. Check the full calendar, featured events, showcase events and events dashboard for more.
