Water main replacement gets underway at 35th Street and Hermitage Avenue on Tuesday, October 16.

Water Main Work to Upend Roads, Traffic, Parking on 35th, Marshfield and Hermitage

Published October 17, 2018

Aged, crumbling water infrastructure dating back as far as 1875 is due for replacement over the next couple months, affecting stretches of West 35th Street, South Marshfield Avenue and South Hermitage Avenue as crews work to update it. During construction, traffic may be held up and parking restricted as workers from Benchmark Construction Co. install 3,891 feet of new, 8-inch water main.

The roadwork will occur on 35th Street between Ashland Avenue and Wood Street, on Hermitage Avenue from 34th Street to 36th Street, and on Marshfield Avenue from 35th Street to 37th Street. Construction should conclude in mid-December, according to a letter from 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas, with complete repaving of the streets completed in spring 2019.

Parking will only be temporarily restricted during working hours, an inconvenience, but a necessary element of completing the work, the letter said.

Anyone with questions about the construction or water main project can contact the 12th Ward public services office by calling (773) 523-8250, emailing ward12@cityofchicago.org or visiting it at 3476 S. Archer Ave. during business hours.
