Published December 3, 2018

The holiday season gets into full swing this week in the McKinley Park neighborhood with a slew of events, including Santa at the Hoyne Park Field House, mid-day on Saturday, December 8, when kids can meet Santa and enjoy holiday treats, thanks to Illinois 1st District State Senator Antonio Muñoz. Also on Saturday, sing along with live performance groups from Horizon Science Academy and the Pilsen/Little Village Neighborhood Choir at Caroling at the Rink, noon to 2 p.m. at the McKinley Park ice rink.

If your holiday tastes trend toward the infernal, celebrate the spirit of Krampus the Christmas devil at Krampbiscusnacht, starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, December 7, at Marz Community Brewing Company. The evening includes a new Krampbiscus beer release and live performance by the Environmental Encroachment brass band. Marz continues its holiday scatology on Sunday, December 9, with Crafty as F*ck, a combination bake sale and craft fair offering tasty treats and one-of-a-kind gifts from local artisans.

Bethany Baptist Church is one of the longest-lived institutions in the McKinley Park neighborhood and remains a center for community support. All are welcome to attend Bethany's 130th Anniversary Celebration Service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, December 9, to commemorate 130 years at its location on Hoyne Avenue.

Otro Ritmo: South Side Punk Night moves to a Saturday night this month, starting at 8 p.m. on December 8 at One City Tap. In addition to the excellent scene with fellow freaks, mutants, punks and goths, the evening offers tunes from Martin Crudo and DJ Croissant, and the first-ever art show for the event. For local nightlife earlier in the week, check out the standing live performance residency of Jazz on Marz with the Jazzeros on Wednesday, December 5, at Marz Community Brewing.

The McKinley Dog Park Council has a big week lined up, starting with the McKinley Dog Park Advisory Council: Quarterly Open Meeting on Monday, December 3, at the McKinley Park field house. On Friday, December 7, join council members and canine fans to celebrate dog park accomplishments at Dog Park Karaoke Night: Bring dog supplies to donate to the Anti-Cruelty Society and compete in karaoke for the best pet-related song performance.

Local tabletop gamers can enjoy a couple great neighborhood sessions this week, starting with more 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons at Level Eater Nine - Prologue Adventure on Tuesday, December 4, at Marz Community Brewing Company. Teens and adults face off over classic and new board games at the semi-weekly Games Day on Saturday, December 8, at the McKinley Park public library.

The library offers great events for all ages this week, including a special Winter Story Time for toddlers on Thursday morning, December 6, and Tween Zone fun and socializing starting at 3:30 p.m. Also on Thursday at the library, the Senior Computer Workshop at 2:30 p.m. offers computer basics with special help for elderly users.

Ice skating season is upon us, and the McKinley Park ice rink is open for business. Check out the full Hockey and Ice Skating Calendar to see dates and times for Open Skate (Wednesdays through Sundays), Rat Hockey (Sundays and Wednesdays) and Stick & Puck, Pond Hockey and Learn to Skate — all scheduled on Saturdays. There is no cost to skate and play hockey at the rink; skate rental is available for $7.
