Civics, Celebrations and Pre-Spring Baseball Round Out This Week's Neighborhood Events

The race for our neighborhood's City Council representative is heating up with candidates Pete DeMay, Martha Rangel and José Rico squaring off against incumbent 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas. The 12th Ward Candidate Forum on Thursday, February 7, is the only conclave of 12th Ward candidates prior to the election on February 26. Hosting organizations Neighbors for Environmental Justice and the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization have invited candidates to attend and answer questions on environmental and other community issues.

Omega Delta Baseball lets kids and parents scratch that pre-spring baseball itch with a series of free clinics that start this week and run all month at the McKinley Park field house. The T-Ball Clinic and Girls Softball Clinic are set for Monday evenings, the Kids Rookie League Baseball Clinic and the Kids Minor League Baseball Clinic are set for Wednesdays, and the Kids Major League Baseball Clinic runs Thursdays. There's no cost, and you don't have to be a member of Omega Delta to participate. Play ball!

It's the Year of the Pig, and the Chinese New Year Party on Sunday, February 10, at Marz Community Brewing Company celebrates with a special menu and beer release, vendors and fortune tellers, and a dragon dance by the Ng Family Chinese Martial Arts Association.

A delightful assortment of handmade crafts and victuals are again on the board at the Arts & Crafts Indoor Market on Sunday, February 10, at Kristoffer's Cakes. The vendor lineup packs the banquet room with unique shopping while the Kristoffer's staff slings both well-loved treats and special dishes created just for the event.

The CityKey is Chicago's official government-issued ID, and residents can get theirs issued at the CityKey Mobile Printing event on Tuesday, February 5, at Aquinas Literacy Center. Just bring proof of identity and proof of residency to get an all-in-one ID, Ventra card, library card and prescription discount card.

The McKinley Park Civic Association Meeting on Wednesday, February 6, connects residents as the longest-serving neighborhood group. Attend the meeting, held at the McKinley Park branch of the Chicago Public Library, and purchase your tickets for the group's Annual Banquet and Awards on March 3.

Jazz on Marz with the Jazzeros keeps the smooth sounds flowing on Wednesday, February 6, at Marz Communtiy Brewing. The tap room's lineup for the weekend includes the vintage Latin DJ collective Sonorama on Friday, February 8, and DJ Brenda Hernandez on Saturday, February 9.

The McKinley Park library is again the place to be for kids this week, with LEGO at the Library on Tuesday, February 5, and a special Valentine's Story Time on Thursday, February 7.
