This Week's Valentine's Day Events, Early Voting and More Heats Up McKinley Park

If you're under the gun for Valentine's Day plans, there's no hotter neighborhood ticket than the 21-and-over Latin Nights with Sandra Magaña this Thursday, February 14, at One City Tap. The evening starts with a lesson in the merengue style of dance and continues with an open dance floor accompanied by the Tap's tasty libations. The lesson costs $8 for each dancer, and Magaña is teaching different styles of dance through February, including bachata and salsa.

Teens and families can find their Valentine's Day fun on Saturday, February 16, at the Valentine's Day Dance at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. A DJ will pump out the jams alongside a heap of Mexican delicacies for sale. Tickets cost $10 each, with young people 14 years old and younger entering for free. All proceeds from this event will go toward helping a local parishoner familiy that recently lost its home in a fire.

Early Voting at McKinley Park for the upcoming February 26 Chicago municipal election begins this week at the McKinley Park field house. From Monday, February 11, through Saturday, February 16, Chicagoans can vote early 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Sunday, February 17, early voting hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Not registered to vote? You can register when you vote early.

The incomparable Otro Ritmo: South Side Punk Night returns this Tuesday, February 12, at One City Tap with house and guest DJs, including DJ Distract and DJ Mañana. On Wednesday, February 13, Marz Community Brewing Company again hosts Jazz on Marz with the Jazzeros, a standing music residency with three local experimental musicians dipping their toes into the smooth sounds of the 80s and 90s.

The McKinley Park Advisory Council Meeting on Monday, February 11, at One City Tap precedes the council elections in March: Attendance at two meetings in the past four months is required in order to vote. The Hoyne Park Advisory Council Meeting is slated for Thursday, February 14, at the Hoyne Park field house.

On Tuesday evening, February 12, the Namaste Charter School Open House welcomes prospective students and families to learn more about its enrollment and programs for Kindergarteners through eighth graders. That morning, Tuesday, February 12, the Velma Thomas Local School Council Meeting brings together parents and community members for information on governance and funding for this neighborhood preschool.

Connect with community policing and public safety concerns at the CAPS Meeting for Beat 912 on Wednesday, February 13, at St. Maurice Church Hall. The Beat 912 meeting is one of the most well-attended in Chicago and is the leading way to voice concerns about local crime to law enforcement.

The DJ lineup at Marz Community Brewing Company this coming weekend includes DJs Maria TZ & Steve Summers on Friday, February 15, and future-forward cowboy tunes from DJ Lawrence Peters. One City Tap again hosts the weekly Karaoke Night on Friday, February 15.
