Published March 5, 2019

For the 48th year in a row, the McKinley Park Civic Association celebrated the community at its annual banquet and awards on Sunday, March 3, 2019. Association officers led the award ceremonies, including presentation of Educators of the Year and William H.G. Toms Community Service awards, alongside a gala gathering and meal at Polonia Banquets.

"Everything I do has been the result of many extraordinary people," said William H.G. Toms winner Jose Negrete, the head of circulation at the McKinley Park branch of the Chicago Public Library. "I get my motivation from you."

Educator of the Year Shelley Lugo-Cordova of Nathanael Greene Elementary School also stated her appreciation for others' help. "These accomplishments are not achieved individually," she said.

Other Educator of the Year awardees included Josefina Garcia of Blessed Sacrament Parish, Nicholas Colletti of the De La Salle Institute, Elizabeth Loerop from Evergreen Academy Middle School, Nadine Filas at Thomas Kelly High School, and Betty Gorman at Namaste Charter School.

The association is the McKinley Park neighborhood's longest-serving community group and meets monthly for most of the year. The next McKinley Park Civic Association Meeting is Wednesday, March 6, at the McKinley Park public library.
