McKinley Park Memorial Day Parade Seeks Marchers, Volunteers

Published March 10, 2019

The McKinley Park Civic Association is calling for participants to march in its annual Memorial Day parade, slated for late morning on Monday, May 27, 2019. The association, which co-sponsors the parade alongside William McKinley American Legion Post 231, seeks local community groups, organizations and other entities to participate by marching or fielding a float or vehicle.

As in years past, the route will traverse the heart of the McKinley Park neighborhood, starting at the McKinley Park branch of the Chicago Public Library with a 9:30 a.m. lineup followed by a 10 a.m. parade kickoff. The parade will conclude at the American Legion post with a ceremony and likely refreshments. There is no fee to participate in the parade, said association Vice President Suzanne Pletsch.

The parade route will run east down West 35th Street from the library at 1915 W. 35th St., then turn south on South Paulina Street. Marchers will turn at West 37th Street to travel west to South Damen Avenue, then north on Damen to 35th Street, ending at the American Legion post at 1956 W. 35th St.

A trolley to carry senior citizens will traverse the parade route. Pletsch noted that no bikes, skateboards or dogs are allowed in the parade.

To sign up to participate in the parade, contact association Secretary Chris Bania by emailing or calling (773) 927-9408. The official signup deadline is May 18, Pletsch said.

The next McKinley Park Civic Association Meeting, including parade planning and preparation, is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at the McKinley Park public library.
