Music Performances Top Neighborhood Events This Week in McKinley Park

A phalanx of great music shows lands in the McKinley Park neighborhood this week. On Thursday night, May 9, One City Tap hosts Chronophage, Twisted Flower and CB Radio Gorgeous Live: a blowout lineup of hard- and dark-rockin' groups that hearken back to classic punk, performing in a show you can find nowhere else in Chicago.

Marz Community Brewing Company brings accomplished indie and singer-songwriter sounds to its tap room on Saturday, May 11, for the Living Hour, Pool Holograph and Domestik Concert. Marz's standing Wednesday night music residency of Jazz on Marz with the Jazzeros again soothes listeners on May 8, and DJs King Hippo and Fanita Banana spin in the tap room, respectively, on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11. 

For an all-ages music experience, check out the cute-as-buttons kids and talented young performers at the McKinley Park Youth Recital and Art Show on Wednesday, May 8, at Bethany Baptist Church. This annual event is rapidly becoming a neighborhood tradition.

If that's not enough music for you, this week offers double-trouble karaoke: Start out on Thursday, May 9, with Karaoke on Marz at Marz Community Brewing Company. Then continue your yowling at Karaoke Night on Friday, May 10, at One City Tap. The Tap also continues its weekly Sabado Gigante DJ-led dance party on Saturday night, May 11.

Take your pick of environmentally focused activities this coming Saturday, May 11: The Chicago River Day on Bubbly Creek brings neighbors and members of Friends of the Chicago River to the fetid South Branch of the Chicago River for some much-needed cleanup. Also on Saturday, explore the local environs with Neighbors for Environmental Justice on the McKinley Park Tour with N4EJ, a walk conducted in conjunction with 350 Chicago.

Living Hour performs on Saturday, May 11, at Marz Community Brewing Company.Is it already almost Mother's Day? Get mom soused and stuffed at the Mother's Day Brunch at Marz Community Brewing Company on Sunday, May 12. The prix fixe, five-course meal includes tableside service, multiple pours of Marz brews and flowers for mom.

Do good by giving blood: The Horizon Science Academy Blood Drive has the talented young engineers of the FIRST 5125 Hawks on the Horizon robotics team organizing with the American Red Cross to solicit donations of this critically needed resource. Sign up and donate on Tuesday, May 7.

Connect with neighborhood public safety and policing at the CAPS Meeting for Beat 912 on Wednesday, May 8. This well-attended community meeting offers one of the best channels for reporting and learning about local crime issues.

Neighborhood youth enjoy some fun opportunities to hang out and socialize this week, including the ongoing Teen Club on Wednesday evenings in the McKinley Park field house. The Tween Zone on Thursday, May 9, lets young people 9 to 12 hang out at the McKinley Park public library for games and socializing. Teens (and adults) can return to the library on the weekend for an afternoon of tabletop gaming at Drop-In Games on Saturday, May 11.

Kids and their families can enjoy Bilingual Story Time with Velma Thomas on Wednesday, May 8, at the McKinley Park library: an event hosted by the Velma Thomas Early Childhood Center. Other library story time events this week include Flower Story Time on Thursday, May 9, plus the weekly Nightfall Story Time on Mondays, including May 6, and Little Learners Story Time on Friday, including May 10.

The elder set can get free computer training at the Senior Computer Workshop on Thursday, May 9. They can also step out for a fit walk through the park for Walking Club on Mondays, including May 6, and Thursdays, including May 9.
