City of Chicago workers installed a new sign on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, designating the northwest corner of South Honore and West 37th streets as the geographic center of Chicago.
The location, long noted as the center of Chicago with a city-installed sign, now enjoys an updated sign designed by the Chicago Department of Transportation. The sign features a Chicago skyline silhouette and a municipal star.
The new sign for the geographic center of Chicago stands at South Honore and West 37th streets in the McKinley Park neighborhood."Welcome to W 37th & S Honore. The Geographic Center of Chicago. 'Greatest City in America,'" the sign reads.
Center Actually in the Canal
The geographic center of Chicago was designated as South Honore and West 37th streets in a 1979 ceremony by Chicago Mayor Michael Bilandic. However, this did not take into account land annexed for O'Hare Airport.
The current actual geographic center of Chicago lies in the middle of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal at around Western Avenue, just on the northwest edge of the McKinley Park neighborhood.
