One of 30 pre-K to 3rd grade educators who qualified as a finalist, Vargas teaches general education in Namaste’s dual-language environment. The Golden Apple Foundation sponsoring the award noted how Vargas “embodies the essence of high-quality professional development."

"These finalists have shown outstanding commitment and made a positive impact on students' growth and learning, significantly contributing to their academic and personal development,” said Alan Mather, president of the Golden Apple Foundation.

Promoting Education

"We are proud to honor these educators, acknowledging their crucial role in shaping the future of education and inspiring the next generation," he said.

The Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching is a crucial element of promoting education during big teacher shortages, said Golden Apple’s CEO Alicia Winckler.

"Such recognition is essential for promoting the critical importance of the teaching profession,” she said.

Teacher Shortages

Final award winners will be announced this spring, each receiving a $5,000 cash award, a fellowship at the Golden Apple Academy of Educators and a free spring sabbatical at Northwestern University, one of the foundation’s partner organizations.

"Amid teacher shortages, it's crucial to recognize educators, like those honored by the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching, for their significant impact on students and the broader educational landscape,” Winckler said.
