Turkey, Food Giveaways Fill Neighborhood Thanksgiving Platters

A block-long line stretched down Archer Avenue for the 12th Ward Thanksgiving Turkey Raffle on Friday, November 22, resulting in donations of turkeys and bags of holiday food to ward residents. Sponsored by 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas, the event was one of two giveaways that weekend, which also featured the MAT Asphalt-sponsored Turkey Giveaway on Saturday, November 23.

"It is important to me that we do our part to ensure every home has the essentials to have a happy and joyous holiday," Cardenas, said. "Over the years, the turkey raffle has become something families can rely on."

The turkeys donated at MAT Asphalt on Saturday, November 23, numbered over 500 and were delivered to residents of the McKinley Park, Brighton Park and other nearby neighborhoods, said MAT Asphalt co-owner Michael Tadin Jr. He and other employees brought their families to the event to assist with the giveaway.

“Giving back to the community is something that so many people and organizations do, and we are glad to play a part in making this holiday brighter for McKinley Park and the 12th Ward,” Tadin said. “We look forward to this becoming an annual event.”

"Thanksgiving traditions, including the raffle and community brunch are a way to say thank you to 12th ward residents that have given me so much,” Cardenas said. "Coming together to celebrate over good food is one of the most enjoyable things that connects us."
