The 5125 Hawks on the Horizon needs your help to judge its upcoming robotics contest at Horizon Science Academy.

Coming off a red-hot 2018-2019 season that saw the robotics team at Horizon Science Academy - McKinley Park dominate in regional competition, the FIRST 5125 Hawks on the Horizon team seeks local professionals with expertise in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to judge an upcoming robotics contest at the school. The Chicago South League Tournament takes place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, at the school campus at 2245 W. Pershing Road, and judges are needed to help evaluate high school-age teams and their robots.

"We are looking for professionals in STEM fields to help judge, particularly engineering, manufacturing, or software development," a team representative said. "There are no strict qualifications."

Judges will interview teams and review their engineering notes and robot to consider them for any of a dozen available awards. An experienced Judge Advisor will assist the cadre of competition judges, who will determine overall winners at the end of the day.

The competition is part of the FIRST® Tech Challenge, an international program for teams of 7th through 12th graders who use interdisciplinary skills to create a robot to overcome specific challenges based on a standard kit provided to each team. Last year, the FIRST 5125 Hawks on the Horizon team made it to national-level competition in Detroit after landing the Chairman's Award in the Wisconsin regionals.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided to competition judges, who should also plan on an hour or two of prep time prior to the event.  Click here to register online to become a judge.
