“Spring park programs offer Chicagoans of all ages and interests an opportunity to explore outdoor play through thousands of sport, fitness, cultural and environmental activities,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Michael P. Kelly. Some of the new programming this spring at McKinley Park is especially focused on individuals and families with special needs.

Programs Open to Primary Disabilities

The Special Olympics Mom, Pop and Tot Yoga sessions on Fridays this spring at McKinley Park offer beginning yoga poses — and lots of fun play time — for caregivers and young children with a primary intellectual or developmental disability. Special Olympics Seasonal Sports offers disabled kids 8 and up a variety of sports play and training, and Adaptive Boccia digs into practice and competition for adult Paralympians.

The field house will host a leadership club on Friday evenings for deaf and hard-of-hearing teenagers, and visually impaired adults will be able to enjoy a weekly Social Club mid-day on Mondays.

These programs join many other sports, learning, dance, fitness and childcare programs offered through McKinley Park. Partnerships with outside leagues and group registrations power a number of seasonal sports programs, including for softball, badminton, gymnastics, baseball, soccer, volleyball and table tennis.

A Popular Park

McKinley Park staff report that interest is strong in this spring's programs, and some sessions are already full. For the very first time, McKinley Park is in the top 30 Chicago parks with the most sign-ups for programs, the staff reports.

Many spring McKinley Park programs are free, or with affordable fees and discounts for local residents. Participants can sign up at the McKinley Park field house and online via the list of programs on the Chicago Park District's web page for McKinley Park. More information is also available by calling (312) 742-PLAY.

Parks like McKinley Park "enrich the lives of everyone that participates," Kelly said. “Local parks are hubs of activity and provide safe spaces to engage in inexpensive programs.”
