The Chicago Police Department and the office of the Cook County Medical Examiner have not released official details on the fatality. However, reports stated that a gun was recovered at the scene, and that Area Central detectives were investigating.

In a reply in a McKinley Park Neighborhood Watch group on Facebook, 12th Ward Alderman George Cardenas wrote that the teen was illegally carrying a firearm that discharged accidentally while he was handling it in his pocket.

Calling the fatality "senseless," Cardenas wrote that the 12th Ward office will be placing special attention on this area and encouraged residents to call 311 to report issues with a nearby problem house in order to build a legal case and address issues through court action.
