McKinley Park Steps Toward Reopening With Day Camp Registration

Published June 11, 2020

Although truncated by the COVID-19 pandemic, summer camp season is about to begin at McKinley Park and other parks in the Chicago Park District. Opening its Internet registration at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 12, Day Camp offers weekday summer sessions for six-year-olds through 12-year-olds from July 6 through August 14, 2020. In-person registration begins on Saturday, June 13, at the park.

"While the 2020 camps will be different, the focus of offering a safe space for children to be healthy, active, make new friends and create lifelong memories remains the same," the Chicago Park District announced on the Day Camp page of its website. "Camps will be run in accordance with state and city guidelines, limiting the number of campers we can safely program at each park."

Safety measures to guard against COVID-19 transmission will be integrated throughout the day camp program and include smaller group sizes, segmentation into separate groups by age, social distancing and wearing masks. Because of the pandemic, no field trips will be offered, and the swimming pool will remain closed.

Chicago Park District staff at McKinley Park noted the big drawdown in numbers for this summer's program: Only a couple dozen children can be accommodated, versus well over 100 for normal programs. Because of these limitations, only local Chicago residents will be eligible to participate.

Open Park Services and Facilities

Although park paths, tennis courts, the dog park, the lagoon and other open areas remain open for safe recreation within McKinley Park and other neighborhood parks, playgrounds are still closed, the McKinley Park pool will remain closed, and no water service will be provided to public water fountains and spigots.

The McKinley Park field house is now open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for restrooms and basic service, but no other park programming is being offered or scheduled due to the pandemic.
