McKinley Dog Park Announces Fund-Raising Campaign

Published July 7, 2020

The dog park in Chicago's McKinley Park is seeking public help to fund basic operations for its urban oasis for hounds, the only one of its kind on the Southwest Side. The McKinley Dog Park Advisory Council has launched a fund-raising campaign to pull together some basic resources to keep the park running well, including for maintenance, cleaning supplies, programming and events.

"We need your help!" the council wrote in an entreaty on its Facebook page. "Please consider donating if you are a frequent user."

Top of the council's shopping list are poop bags to refill the dispensers at the park, the costs of which will be fully covered if only three people sign up for a monthly $5 donation, the council wrote.

The online donation form for the McKinley Dog Park lets donors choose their level of giving, and it supports recurring payments. Since the McKinley Dog Park works through the non-profit Chicago Parks Foundation as its fiscal agent, all donations are tax-deductible.

The McKinley Dog Park, which had been in planning for several years as a grassroots neighborhood project, received approval and funding from the Chicago City Council in 2018, and it broke ground in August 2019. Construction was completed in late 2019 and early 2020, with the council announcing a soft opening in February 2020.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, all water fountains remain turned off at Chicago Park District properties, including at the dog park. The McKinley Dog Park Advisory Council reminded all visitors to be sure to bring along their own water for their dogs, especially in hot summer weather.

The McKinley Dog Park Advisory Council welcomes more involvement from community volunteers to help out, including serving in the role of Dog Park Ambassador.
