Elected officials, leaders of William McKinley American Legion Post 231, veterans and families paid homage to fallen service members at a wreath-laying ceremony on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the post’s headquarters in Chicago’s McKinley Park neighborhood.

“The freedoms we have today came at immeasurable cost,” said 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins, who grew up nearby in the McKinley Park neighborhood. The fallen “paid the ultimate price by those who serve,” he said.

Also speaking were 11th Ward Alderwoman Nicole Lee, who helped sponsor and support the event along with Cook County 11th District Commissioner John Daley.

“We remember all of them,” Daley said. “I thank them and honor their sacrifice.”

Lee noted the importance of support from and for military families. “Military service is not just about those serving active duty,” she said.

James Balcer, veteran and former 11th Ward alderman, led the ceremony, which included laying of a wreath at the post’s memorial, a rifle salute and playing of TAPS with a moment of silence.

“We’re very proud of this post,” said Commander Patrick McGuire. “We love our communities and the South Side.”

The American Legion post, along with the McKinley Park Civic Association, is also getting ready for the neighborhood Memorial Day Parade on the morning of Monday, May 26, 2025.
