The Aquinas Literacy Center in Chicago's McKinley Park neighborhood trained six new volunteer language tutors to help adults learn English.

Patrick Collins, Andrew McCabe, Katrina Meenahan, Jose Trejo, Ishaq Umer and Richard Winokur completed the day-long training process at the center on Saturday, April 25, 2026, and will be matched for one-on-one tutoring, many times with immigrants new to McKinley Park and the U.S..

The program is in high demand, said Program Coordinator Wendy Salto. "Currently there are still many adult students on the wait list for English tutors."

Engaged in Community

The Aquinas Literacy Center, at 1751 W. 35th St., Chicago, hosts all training for tutors and instruction for learners. They meet for 90 minutes each week at the center, with students also learning through other resources and training materials avaialble at Aquinas.

"Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community," Salto said.

Contact List

"Please consider becoming a volunteer English literacy tutor," she said.

The program conducts regular tutor training sessions throughout the year, and interested individuals can be put on the Aquinas contact list to be notified of the next one, Salso said.
