The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) just published an op-ed against the widening of I-55: "Illinois Needs to Address Transportation Pollution—Not Widen I-55." In it, authors Meghan Hassett and J.C. Kibbey advocate against adding additional toll lanes to I-55 leading into Chicago, which is under consideration by the Illinois legislature. They write:

Creating managed toll lanes on I-55 would likely worsen climate change, increase pollution and put already overburdened environmental justice communities at risk.

Their article also notes the recent Northwestern University study finding big concentrations of harmful pollutants along Interstates, including I-55 bordering the north edge of the McKinley Park neighborhood.
