McKinley Park Farmers Market attendees enjoy live performance at the market during the 2017 season.

McKinley Park Farmers Market Seeks Vendors, Volunteers for 2018 Season

Published March 1, 2018

The 2018 McKinley Park Farmers Market still has vendor slots available for the popular weekly neighborhood event and is reaching out to potential vendors and volunteers who wish to get involved. The market will offer fresh produce, ready-to-eat items and local goods every Sunday from June 4 through September 30, 2018, at its standing location beside the William McKinley statue in the northwest corner of the park.

"The McKinley Park Farmers Market provides a space where community members can gather to share good, healthy food while learning more about the folks who grew it," said market manager Stef Funk. "We plan to bring new local vendors, more music and enriching and engaging educational activities for all ages."

In addition to market item sales, the farmers market will continue its co-presentation of live performances by local musicians, conducted in conjunction with the McKinley Park Advisory Council, the sponsoring organization of the farmers market.

Participating vendors realize a unique opportunity to form relationships with consumers in the local area, said market volunteer Jeff Yorke, especially for smaller, local businesses. "It was the intimacy of the connection between the people within the community and the vendors themselves that inspired me to offer my own help as a volunteer," he said.

Other volunteers also noted the market's role in the community as their inspiration for getting involved. "The McKinley Park Farmers Market is a small example of the beauty that comes from diverse communities interacting," said volunteer Joe Fujan. "It is humbling watching strong networks and partnerships form."

Farmers market volunteer Kyle Jones-Carver talked up the fun and social nature of the market: "It's also great stopping point during a walk or bike ride on the park trail."

Funk noted the local nature of all items offered at the market, as well as the benefit of knowing where your food comes from. "At our market, 'local' means it was grown or produced in the Chicagoland area, with the exception of one of our farms, which is located in Michigan less than 100 miles away," she said.

Vendor applications are due before April 30, 2018, and vendors will have the opportunity to participate on specific dates, although a commitment to the full season of 18 Sundays is preferred. Click the following link to download the vendor application:
