McKinley Park Crime Spikes in First Half of 2022

Serious crime in Chicago's McKinley Park Community Area rose almost 32 percent in the first six months of 2022, compared with the first six months of 2021. Serious crime, also known as index crime, includes homicide, assault, battery, theft, robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft and criminal sexual assault.

In 2022 there were 259 serious crimes reported in McKinley Park, compared to 177 in the first six months of 2021.

Theft skyrocketed 54 percent, from 52 incidents in 2021 to 113 in the first six months of 2022. Car theft also registered a large increase of 42 percent, from 11 in 2021 to 19 in the first six months of 2022.

The McKinley Park News compiled these crime statistics from City of Chicago and Chicago Police Department sources, including the Chicago Data Portal.

More Homicides

Homicides saw a large increase — four in the first six months of 2022 compared to just one in 2021 — with police making one arrest connected to them. A fifth homicide also occurred in early September of this year.

Burglary in McKinley Park fell from 11 to 8 incidents, a 37 percent dip, and battery dropped to 54 from 57 incidents, a 6 percent decrease, in the first half of this year.

Bridgeport Crime Rises

The Bridgeport Community Area, which neighbors McKinley Park to the east, saw a similar spike in serious crimes of 27 percent: 406 index crimes in the first half of 2022 compared to 295 in the first half of 2021.

Burglaries in Bridgeport skyrocketed by 65 percent during these times, from 15 to 43 burglaries. Theft also saw a big jump of 37 percent, from 99 to 157 incidents during the first six months of this year.

Lower West Side Crime

The Lower West Side Community Area, which includes the Pilsen neighborhood, saw the largest jump in serious crimes of all neighborhoods surrounding McKinley Park. An almost a 37 percent increase in index crimes hit the Lower West Side: 824 in the first six months of 2022 compared to 523 in the first half of 2021.

Theft and burglary accounted for the largest crime increase in the Lower West Side. Theft rose 55 percent — from 143 incidents in 2021 to 320 in the first six months of 2022 — and burglary jumped 44 percent, from 25 incidents in the first half of 2021 to 45 in 2022.

Brighton Park Crime Rises

Comparing these periods, serious crime in the Brighton Park Community Area rose by 27 percent, with 657 total incidences of index crime in the first half of 2022 compared with 478 in the first six months of 2021.
