Police: Street Racers Pelt Cops, Robbery Crew Trolls Pershing Road

Officers responding to a call of drag racing on Sept. 17, 2022, in the 1800 block of West 31st Street were pelted with objects thrown by bystanders watching drivers do donuts, according to police speaking at the October Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) meeting for Beat 912.

The officers called for assistance, and the offenders then fled when more officers arrived, Chicago Police Department Officer Jason Sollis said at the October 12, 2022, CAPS meeting. The two officers suffered minor injuries, and their car was damaged from thrown debris, Sollis said.

Sollis also told meeting attendees about two robberies in the same area, at about the same time, apparently committed by the same people.

Armed Robbery Crew

The victim reported that two offenders confronted him on the street. They drew handguns, took the victim’s belongings and fled in a white Cadillac.

The second robbery happened at 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2022, in the same block of 1900 West Pershing Road, Sollis said. The victim reported that three men got out of a white car with guns and approached the victim on the street. They took his wallet and then drove away.

Security Cameras

Sollis later reported that a restaurant in that 1900 block of West Pershing Road planned to install security cameras. Under its Home and Business Protection Program, the City of Chicago will reimburse homeowners and business owners who install security cameras up to $225 per camera, Sollis said. This program continues through Dec. 31, 2024.

As Sollis reported, in police Beat 912 from Sept. 14 through Oct. 12, 2022, there were:

  • 1,429 call for police service
  • 28 reports of shots fired
  • Five arrests
  • One aggravated assault
  • Three aggravated batteries
  • Four robberies
  • One burglary
  • Six motor vehicle thefts

Community Engagement

The police department's 9th District will hold two Community Conversations toward creating the district's 2023 strategic plan, Sollis said, and the 9th District invites the neighborhood to participate.

The next CAPS Meeting for Beat 912, which covers almost all of the McKinley Park neighborhood, will be held at 7 p.m. on November 9, 2022, at the McKinley Park field house, 2210 W. Pershing Road, Chicago. Meetings are held most months on the second Wednesday.
