McKinley Park Ramps Into Winter with Holiday, Seasonal Events

Get the kids out onto the ice for the Chicago Blackhawks Hockey Clinics on Saturday, December 15, at the ice rink in McKinley Park. Free hockey instruction by experts from the Fan Development staff of the Chicago Blackhawks lets kids ages 5 to 12 learn how to play hockey, including free use of skates and equipment. Still shopping for that special gift? Marz Community Brewing Company hosts the Got You Some Holiday Market on Sunday afternoon, December 16. This New Orleans-inspired blowout of food, live music and Marz beer offers unique items from nearly a dozen local vendors. The Herbsaint Band will stomp out traditional jazz and Dixieland, and guest chef Chris Reed of Rice Table will take over the kitchen for a curated Cajun menu.

The McKinley Park Advisory Council Meeting on Monday evening, December 10, connects volunteer leaders and community members to bring great things to McKinley Park, such as the seasonal farmers markets and the recent Caroling at the Park series. The Hoyne Park Advisory Council Meeting on Thursday, December 13, focuses on the charming and beloved Hoyne Park and the programs and services it brings to the neighborhood. Both offer fantastic opportunities to meet neighbors and make a real difference for the community and its residents.

Local astronomers will discuss cosmology alongside fermented beverages at Ice-stronomy on Tap: Winter Wonderland, on Tuesday, December 11, at Marz Community Brewing Company. Also that night at Marz, the delve into the dank dungeons of "Portsbridge" continues with another Level Eater Nine - Prologue Adventure, offering Dungeons & Dragons play from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

McKinley Park has one of the lowest crime rates on the Southwest Side, and the consistently strong attendance at monthly meetings of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy is a testament to the community's commitment to public safety. The CAPS Meeting for Beat 912 on Wednesday, December 12, brings together Chicago Police Department officers with residents and representatives from local institutions and elected officials to identify and resolve local crime issues.

Additional nightlife events this week include the standing Jazz on Marz with The Jazzeros, on Wednesday, December 12, at Marz Community Brewing Company. Karaoke fans can get their fix at the weekly Karaoke Night at One City Tap on Friday, December 14. 

Kids and families should look to the McKinley Park public library for fun this week, including LEGO at the Library on Tuesday, December 11, and Family Night: Holiday Fun on Wednesday, December 12. The ongoing Nightfall Story Time on Mondays and Little Learners Story Time on Fridays are great interactive programs for small children.

The Velma Thomas Local School Council Meeting brings the community and administration of this leading local preschool together to discuss funding and oversight. It is scheduled for Tuesday morning, December 11.
