Big Week for Neighborhood Connects Community Through Meetings, Performances

2019 is set to be a harbinger for the dog park that's coming to McKinley Park, and the McKinley Dog Park Advisory Council Meeting on Monday evening, January 7, will provide the latest news and details. Attend to learn about park design updates, hear how you can support the dog park, and discover when you'll be able to take your pooch to the fully completed dog-friendly area, one of the first on the South Side.

Otro Ritmo: South Side Punk Night returns to One City Tap the night of Tuesday, January 8, presenting live performance from UDUSIC and Tierra Muerta alongside guest DJs Crave Case and Dipping Sauce. This monthly conclave of freaks, mutants, goths and punks is one of the neighborhood's top nights out, and this month's proceeds will benefit Connections for Abused Women and Their Children (CAWC).

The fastest local kids and adults on ice will face off at the Silver Skates Speed Skating Competition on Thursday, January 10, at the McKinley Park ice rink. This local qualifying meet is open to all registrants, and winners will proceed to the citywide speed skating championship. Stop by the rink this week to practice and pick up a registration: The rink's open Wednesdays through Sundays.

Local activist group Neighbors for Environmental Justice hosts their Winter Community Social from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, at the McKinley Park branch of the Chicago Public Library. Drop by at any time to engage on local environmental issues, share your concerns and enjoy lemonade, cookies and STEM activities for kids.

Connect with local literary revolutionaries at the Commune Magazine Launch Party on Saturday, January 12, at Marz Community Brewing Company. Commune magazine editors will lead discussion, introduce the project and celebrate the launch of the first, hot-off-the-press print issue of the magazine. A dance party with DJ Calmmunism, Kenny Kicks and Jared Brown follows the publication launch.

Local crime is in the crosshairs of the community at the CAPS Meeting for Beat 912 on Wednesday, January 9. The neighborhood's local CAPS meeting is one of the most well-attended in Chicago, and it's the best place to get details on recent local crime incidents, report concerns to attending community police officers and share information and intelligence with neighbors.

The final Level Eater Nine - Prologue Adventure delves through a custom Dungeons & Dragons campaign on Tuesday, January 8, at Marz Community Brewing Company. This lead-up to the big Level Eater Nine gaming extravaganza is the culmination of several prologue sessions, all to benefit the non-profit Lumpen Radio.

Karaoke fans get a double dose of singing this week: Marz Community Brewing hosts Karaoke on Marz on Thursday, January 10, and One City Tap puts on their weekly Karaoke Night on Friday, January 11, with the help of DJ Angel.

Also at Hoyne Park, Omega Delta Baseball Early Registration lets families sign kids up on Saturday, January 12, for discounted baseball and softball play with this fantastic local league.
